Imagine this: You are strolling around downtown Sacramento on 2nd Saturday and stop at Drewski’s Hot Rod Kitchen. (You want to try it because you remember a friend raving on Facebook about how good their grilled cheese was!) What will you do while waiting in line?
If you are anything like me, you will be checking into Foursquare! Earning those points, vying for mayor-ship, collecting those badges, and more importantly checking to see what other people recommend!
Foursquare’s recently released 4.0 version iPhone app introduces “Radar”, a new feature that lets you know what’s happening nearby! Once you approve this feature, you will receive notifications when you are close to places on the Foursquare lists that you’ve created and those that you follow. Alex Rainert, head of product over at Foursquare, says the applications will also notify you when there are three or more friends checked into a location within walking distance!
Now, while you are in line, if you see that a friend is checked in to a burger joint a block away, you can meet up with them after you get your food, or more importantly for Drewski’s, you can convince them to meet you to try the grilled cheese!
Foursquare 4.0 for the iPhone is available in the App Store, but does require users to update to iOS5. In upcoming months, Radar will also be added to the other Foursquare apps. “Radar is core to what we want to do. It’s important to us to have it available to all of our users,” says Rainert.
Are you excited or indifferent about this update?
