Recently, I was browsing the Internet and noticed that many companies do not take full advantage of the benefits of content creation. When you have invested so much time and energy into creating an awesome company website, it is natural that you will want people to see it. Whether or not content really is king, there is no doubt that blog articles, Facebook posts, and Twitter updates are critical in driving traffic to your web page and in formulating your online marketing strategy. While creating content is very easily instructed, you may have noticed that it can be quite difficult to get started. That’s where we come in. In an attempt to inspire the imagination and to get the ideas flowing, we have come up with four steps to ease the symptoms of writer’s block and to get the ball rolling for your next article or post.
Step One: Choose Your Tone. Deciding on a voice for your company’s image is a crucial first step when beginning to strategize your online marketing efforts. Look to your target audience to help you select a personality and then try to be consistent across all of your online platforms. If your target demographic includes conservative businessmen and businesswomen, you may consider setting a serious and professional tone to your updates. Write articles and posts that are direct and concise in order to reduce clutter and deliver
exactly what your audience is looking for. If you are writing to engage with parents, twenty-somethings, or just an Average Joe, you might want to employ a sassy, sarcastic, or humorous voice to speak for your company. Incorporating attitude and humor into your business profiles can create a more humanistic feel and can capture your audience’s attention. If you are somewhere in between, don’t be afraid to drop personal sentiments and one-liners throughout your informative content to help lighten the mood and to keep the reader’s attention. Your audience will appreciate the sincerity while still comprehending the point.
Step Two: Be Helpful. After you have chosen a tone for your business, it is important to look into what it is that your target audience wants. Most companies aim to make the customer happy, and to do this you want to make sure you are providing them with information that will benefit them in some way. If you are in a business-to-business set up, post about industry relevant topics such as news updates, fresh findings, and tips for helping a business succeed. If your business setup allows you to interact directly with the customer, you might consider posting fun finds about local events, saving money at the grocery store, and DIY ideas that can save
time and money. Choose ways to help your customer by analyzing why they are coming to you in the first place, and then provide fun anecdotes, news, and advice on topics that run parallel to your company’s goals. Customers want to feel that they are your company’s highest priority so show them that you care by providing them with resources that will make their lives a little bit better.
Step Three: Get Personal. Social media and blogging are about showing who you really are and about bringing an untouchable brand name down to a personal level. Don’t be afraid to have a point of view in articles, to give reviews of industry related or worldwide happenings, and to keep fans and followers updated on the exciting endeavors your company is undertaking. Followers want to feel included, like they are a part of the inner circle of your business, so let them in and show them around. When experiencing a lull in brilliant ideas, consider writing a feature about a business event that everyone is looking forward to, such as a team outing or potluck, or interviewing a fellow team member about their experience and responsibilities at your company. If reiterating a blog post or subject that has already been created, put your personal spin on it by writing or reviewing the post from your own point of view. There are countless ways to put your voice and trademark into each article and update you post, so make sure to show your fans who you really are instead of hiding behind your logo.
Step Four: Stay Current. As with any online entity, it is important to stay current and to regularly post and monitor your social media efforts. When writing and creating content to distribute across all of your social platforms, it is important to keep in mind the relevance of your posts – ask yourself if they relate to something that is happening right now and whether or not they can withstand the test of time. Content subjects such as business tips, product reviews, and industry related humor will continue to capture an audience’s attention as the years roll on. Posting about holidays, important events, and company updates are a great way to mix up the formality of timeless pieces and to show that, although thinking about the future, your company is still paying attention to the present. The trick with these posts is to make sure you monitor them regularly and to interact with any comments in a timely manner so that you your answers are still pertinent. Whether you are writing for the present or for the future, stay on top of your campaign so that your fans and followers know that their inquiries and needs are a top priority.
