In your social circle, your popularity can be measured by your number of friends, how keen they are to reproduce your style, how closely they listen to your advice or how often they invite you out for various events.
Well, in the digital world, there’s an app for that. If you have yet to set up your account, consider this your social media education, after you’re done here—download the app!
Klout helps users, businesses and individuals alike, “understand and harness their expertise and influence.” Klout is a web and mobile application that measures your level of authority in the social networking realm. “We measure influence primarily as the ability to drive others to action. When you produce content online, we look at how your network responds to that content.”
Klout is able to collect and analyze data from social networks and then gives each user an overall score based on his or ability to excite, entertain, and engage with people online. The geniuses behind Klout have written an algorithm that is able to process 3 billion pieces of content and connections each day in order to offer users a new, and accurate, score every morning.
The data comes from public networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and any other network you choose to connect to the software. The software can only monitor and give you credit for the sites you add, if you have a profile in a private network, or one that Klout does not yet support, it will not be counted in your score.
According to the Klout blog, they currently measure the 5 popular social media sites, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, & Google+. You can connect your YouTube page, Instagram, Tumblr, Blogger, WordPress, and more; however, those accounts do not impact your overall score yet. Some of the actions they currently use when determining your Klout score are:
- Twitter: Retweets & Mentions
- Facebook: Comments, Wall-Posts, Likes
- Google+: Comments, Re-shares, +1
- LinkedIn: Comments, Likes
- Foursquare: To-do’s and Tips
Klout can be a fantastic resource if you are a business owner or digital marketer because it truthfully measures your ability to drive action online.
Recently, Klout added the Experts feature, which allows those who yield a high Klout score in a certain industry, to answer questions related to their field. The new addition is similar to a question and answer service. It allows users who are influential within their field to, not only increase their authority in that subject, but also to educate others seeking expert advice.
Klout Experts is currently in a preview period, which means the company has made the service available to a limited number of influential users. These users can answer questions, and both the answer and question will show up on the search engine Bing. Thus offering these influential few to gain even more authority when millions of people use Bing to search the Internet every day.
But don’t you fret, if you are interested in sharing your expertise or social media tips with the digital world, you can request early access to Klout Experts by signing up for the waitlist.
Creating a profile on Klout only takes moments, then you can connect your various social media profiles and watch your score increase. But remember, don’t let it get to your head, like we learned from watching or reading Spiderman— “With great power, comes great responsibility.”
